Two branches of the NIH (National Institute of Health) – the NCCAM (National Center For Complementary and Alternative Medicine) and the NIAMS (National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases) have completed the first part of its large-scale G.A.I.T. trial on the effects of Glucosamine and Chondroitin on osteoarthritis. This is the first major US study that not only examines the effects of Glucosamine HCl and Chondoitin Sulfate, alone and in combination, on pain caused by osteoarthritis but includes a direct performance comparison to the drug celecoxib. Celecoxib is the generic name for the COX-2 anti-inflammatory drug best known as Celebrex.

The intial data conclusively shows that the combination of Glucosamine HCl and Chondroitin Sulfate is effective in treating moderate to severe knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. Most importantly, the same data shows that the combination of supplements is more effective in relieving knee pain than the highly touted drug celecoxib.
