The Japanese people are keen on good, healthy living. Maintaining good health is a major focus in Japan. The Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare is strict with their regulations, especially when it comes to on-label health claims. Yet, they are fair in their inspection of new technology and don't hesitate to approve claims for healthy foods and health supplements that are backed by clearly positive clinical studies.
Chitosan is now approved in Japan for on-label claims for cholesterol reduction according to the publication, Nutraceuticals World. The category of FOSHU foods (similar to functional foods or nutraceuticals in USA or Europe) in Japan is tightly controlled by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Each food item and its claims go through an official approval process with the health authorities.
In the USA, the FDA does not recognize the use of chitosan for the maintenance of healthy cholesterol levels and, thus, no such claims can be made on chitosan sold in the US.

The NutraSense company offers ChitoSense® which uses only LipoSan Ultra as its only source of chitosan. LipoSan Ultra® is made from North Atlantic shrimp shell and, as a result, yields a whiter color, substantially lower lead content and freedom from pesticide and antibiotic contamination associated with shell produced from thrid world shrimp farms.
