3/1/2011 - ABC World News with Diane Sawyer has launched a groundbreaking series focusing on American manufacturing and our economy called “Made in America”. Both on air and online they will be addressing questions related to the cost of goods and manufacturing these goods here in the U.S. versus overseas, job creation, and more.
There is no question that manufacturing has a major impact on our economy and in the nation’s workforce. The United States has fewer manufacturing jobs now than we did in the 1940’s. In 1960, eight percent of all goods that Americans bought were made overseas. In 1979 we saw domestic manufacturing peak, and today nearly sixty percent of everything we buy is made outside of the United States. Economists say that if every American spent an extra $3.33 per year on U.S.-made goods, it would create almost 10,000 new jobs in this country.
